Learning to Overcome Fear and Grow in Faith — Matthew 8:23–27
Jesus and His disciples were caught in a violent storm on the Sea of Galilee. The storm was so severe that the boat was being swamped by waves, yet Jesus remained asleep. Frightened for their lives, the disciples woke Him and cried out for help. Jesus rebuked them for their fear and lack of faith, then commanded the winds and the sea to become calm. The disciples were astonished by His authority over nature.
Following Jesus does not mean we will never face danger, hardship, or fear. Just as God led the Israelites to the Red Sea and Paul encountered a violent storm at sea, believers may face frightening circumstances even while following God's direction. The important lesson is to turn to God in times of trouble, trusting His presence, power, and promises.
God has authority over the sea and the storms, can deliver people from distress, and offers mercy and grace in times of need. Fear is a natural human response, but believers can experience fear and still pray, obey, and trust God. Like the father who cried, “I believe; help my unbelief!” in Mark 9:24, we can honestly bring our doubts to the Lord.
Jesus has authority even over the most frightening circumstances. Faith does not mean we never feel afraid; it means we turn to Jesus in our fear and trust Him. The disciples' experience challenges us to grow in faith, remember God's power, and depend on Him when life feels overwhelming.

This is the edited version of the Sunday Service. The main purpose of a true believer's life is kingdom mission. Followers are called not merely to leave something behind but to participate in Jesus’ work: becoming “fishers of men” and proclaiming the kingdom of God.
The reward is lasting, not merely immediate. Those who leave things for Jesus and the gospel receive a new spiritual family and eternal life, while also facing persecution.
The focus is a heavenly homeland rather than earthly security.
However, earthly security and well-being are not contrary to the mission, and they do not oppose it. Many portions in the Bible bear witness to that. Looking to Abraham, King David, Solomon, to name a few.

Matthew 8:14–17 reports Jesus’ authority over sickness, disease, and demonic oppression. When Jesus entered Peter’s house, He healed Peter’s mother-in-law simply by touching her hand, and she immediately responded by serving Him. That evening, many sick and demon-oppressed people were brought to Jesus, and He healed them and cast out demons by His word. These events fulfilled Isaiah’s prophecy that the Messiah would take our illnesses and bear our diseases. The passage reminds us that Jesus is compassionate and powerful.
Jesus demonstrates complete authority over sickness, disease, and demonic oppression. His healing ministry points beyond physical healing to His greater mission of bearing human suffering and sin, ultimately bringing restoration and hope.

The story of the Roman centurion highlighting how his understanding of authority and deep humility demonstrated extraordinary faith in Jesus' power to heal by word alone. They emphasize that salvation and God's kingdom are accessible to people of all nations through faith, prompting believers to actively share the Gospel with others.
I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands.
One way we can obey Christ is to bring His Word to those who need healing – spiritual healing – so they may join that banquet with Jesus. That simple step of obedience to Christ, by sharing the Gospel with another, might just allow us to witness the miracle of Christ being worked in another. And maybe have the blessing of watching a baby in Christ learn to walk with Him. And that is a joy!
